What is the Viking 350 Ultrasonic Drill

Precision holes in stones, with no risk of cracking

The Viking 350 Ultrasonic Drill is manual equipment designed for delicate holes in precious and semi-precious stones, suitable for handmade jewelry and precision lapidary work.

Unlike a conventional rotary drill bit, ultrasonic drilling uses high-frequency vibration combined with an abrasive (emery powder) to gradually wear away the material, without the mechanical impact of a bit spinning at high speed. This drastically reduces the risk of cracking or chipping fragile stones during drilling.

It’s a manually operated machine, which lets the artisan position the hole anywhere on the stone with full control — ideal for jewelry pieces where the exact hole position is part of the design.

How it works

  1. 1

The generator converts electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical vibration (ultrasound)

  2. 2

The sonotrode vibrates in contact with the stone, with abrasive (emery powder) at the contact tip

  3. 3

The vibration gradually wears away the material, without the impact of a regular rotary drill bit

  4. 4

The operator manually controls the position and depth of the hole in the stone

  5. 5

Clean, precise hole, from 0.5 mm to 3.0 mm in diameter, with no cracking of the piece

Drill or diamond drill bit?

Which equipment to choose for your hole

The choice between the Ultrasonic Drill and the Tubular Diamond Drill Bits mainly depends on the diameter of the hole you need to make.

Viking 350 Ultrasonic Drill

You are here
0.5 mm – 3.0 mm

Recommended for small, delicate holes in precious and semi-precious stones, where the risk of cracking the material is the main concern. Manual operation, with full control over the hole’s position.

Tubular Diamond Drill Bits

1.7 mm – 6.0 mm

Recommended for larger, faster holes in stones and glass, using rotary mechanical cutting. The tubular (hollow) shape helps dissipate heat and allows for larger-diameter holes at higher speed.
